A 2017 report on inclusive education by the World Bank and the Global Partnership for Education found that children with learning disabilities remain severely excluded from educational policies and still lag far behind their peers. The study, conducted in 19 middle- and low-income countries, concluded that 3 in 10 children with disabilities have never enrolled in school and just about half of those who do enroll complete primary school.
In the light of a pandemic, we can already tell where the pendulum will swing as far as educational opportunities are concerned since this category of learners have already been at the risk of exclusion even before the pandemic.
To truly ensure that no one is left behind in the pursuit of the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development, the topic of inclusion and diversity cannot be overemphasized. The topic is now more relevant than later.
The COVID-19 pandemic has shown us the gaps in our system and how much work we need to put in at achieving inclusion in our schools. That being said, we have come to see that there are things we can do to achieve inclusion that have come to be as a result of our experience in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
This webinar is targeted at school owners, governments and parents on how to ensure that the already marginalised learners (i.e. learners with disabilities) are not totally excluded from the school system and what we can do to return to a truly inclusive classroom.
