ICAN 2022
The International Common Assessment of Numeracy (ICAN) is a new assessment tool developed in 2019 to provide a comparable and affordable test for the Global South. ICAN 2022 built on the experiences of country-based Citizen-Led Assessments and was conducted in households across Kenya, Mozambique, and Nigeria to all children aged 5-16 years. TEP Centre, a member of the PAL Network, led the survey in 180 rural communities and 3,602 households, assessing 5,869 children in three local government areas of Lagos State, Nigeria. This work resulted in the 2023 ICAN report titled “Understanding Foundational Literacy and Numeracy in Sub-Saharan Africa”.
